5 Tips That Will Help You Maintain Your Gutters After A Cleaning

 In blog

Your gutters help protect your roof from water damage making it one of the most essential components of your home. That’s why properly maintaining your gutters is vital. This process extends beyond regular cleaning and washing. Here are five tips our team here at Elite Power Washing has for homeowners looking to properly maintain their gutters.

1. Clean Regularly

As you can imagine, the number one thing you must do to keep your gutters functioning properly is to clean them regularly. Leaves, twigs, dirt, and other debris collect in your gutter over time. These things collect quicker if you’re in a wet climate.

If you allow the build-up of debris to go too far, water can back up onto the roof and overflow the gutters. It’s recommended that you remove the debris from your gutters by hand at least twice a year. The best times to do these cleanings are in the spring and fall.

2. Wash Out Your Gutters

Washing out your gutters after you clean them serves two purposes. First, it picks up any debris that may have been left behind. Second, it helps ensure that water is flowing out of the downspouts correctly.

It’s important to note that washing your gutters must be done after you clean them out not before. Washing your gutters before you clean them will result in water buildup and debris clogs that will be more difficult to remove. Washing out your gutters should go hand-in-hand with cleaning them.

3. Snake the Downspouts

So, you’ve cleaned out all of the debris and you’ve washed out your gutters. Yet, for some reason, you’re still noticing that water is not flowing out of downspouts the way it should. This is oftentimes the result of buildups in your downspouts.

Much like cleaning the gutters, snaking the downspouts should be something that you do regularly. The most efficient way to do this is by using a plumber’s snake. You will remove any debris that has piled up in the downspouts, making it difficult for water to flow through.

4. Consider Gutter Guards

Perhaps you find cleaning your gutters too much of a hassle or perhaps you just don’t have the time. Gutter guards can be an effective remedy. These guards help prevent unwanted debris from falling into your gutter.

Gutter guards are wire screens that fir over your gutters to keep debris from collecting inside of them. You will want to look for gutter guards that are made from aluminum so they will not rust. You will still want to check on these guards regularly to ensure they haven’t been damaged and are functioning properly.

5. Regularly Inspect Your Gutters and Downspouts

Regularly inspecting your gutters for damage is arguably just as important as regularly cleaning them. Due to the harsh nature of the job, gutters are prone to wear and tear that will need addressing. It’s also not uncommon, especially in harsher climates, for gutters to become damaged after heavy rains.

Inspect your gutters to ensure there are no holes or rust. If you notice anything wrong it’s important that you take immediate action to ensure the safety of your roof. Gutter projects can be easy DIY projects but don’t be afraid to contact an expert if needed.
