Making your Deck and Fencing Look New Again
Do you have a deck or fencing that looks like it needs a little help? Is the green and gray taking over your fence and making it look like it’s in need of replacement? The Elite Power Washing team has some tips to help get your fence or deck looking new again and extend its life. We specialize in wood restoration.
Can I Clean My Deck and Fence Myself?
Of course, you can! If you love DIY projects cleaning your wood deck and fencing is something that you can do. After a few years the dirt, grime, and crud start to collect on wood fencing. If moss and algae grow on your decking it can get very slippery when wet, creating a safety concern. With a little effort, you can keep your deck safe and bring that fresh, new look back.
Pressure washing and cleaning your deck or fence can extend its life for many years. When your deck or fence is installed the wood has a protective coating. After a few years, the protective coating wears off. The wood underneath starts to age, turn gray and gets dirty. A good power washing gets rid of the gray and grime and prepares the wood for a fresh protective coating or stain.
Safety First and Other Initial Needs
Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty. This is not the time to put on something that you care about. Good eye protection is needed; either goggles or a face shield will work. Choose sturdy shoes or boots to wear as a pressure washer can cut off toes or take off the skin if you power wash your foot. If the pressure washer is gas powered you’ll need gasoline. Make sure there are no children or pets close to the work area.
What Else Do I Need?
You need a power washer. If you don’t have one you can rent one, and we suggest a power washer with a 1500-2000 PSI. If the pressure washer has a higher rating you risk gouging and damaging the wood. A 15 degree and 25-degree pressure washing tips are the most effective for this job.
Start with the 25-degree pressure washing tip about 18” from the fence. Take long strokes with the water wand going with the grain of the wood. Keep the wand moving as stopping can cause gouges. Short strokes will leave a visible pattern. Watch the stream as the fresh wood is revealed when the gray away washes away. Overlay your sweeping strokes with the area cleaned. When you have areas that are stubborn gently bring the tip closer. Once you’re comfortable pressure washing you can switch to the 15-degree tip if you think you need more power.
Once It’s Clean What Do I Need To Do?
Now that the wood of your deck or fence is back to looking new it needs to dry for at least 24 hours. If there are areas needing repair, now is the time to do it. On a day clear and sunny day apply a protective wood coating or stain so your deck or fencing will look new again. Rain will wash your protective coating away within 24 hours of its application.
